I have recently had a rash of cases where my client did not obtain collision coverage on their automobile insurance policies. And the reason is always the same. Their insurance agent told them it wasn't needed because their car was old and if involved in an accident, it would just be totaled out, not repaired. That is a big mistake.
Collision coverage pays for the cost to repair or replace your vehicle if the other driver had no, or not enough property damage coverage. It also pays if the accident was your fault.
Suppose you have an older car that is totaled out by a driver with no insurance. Without collision coverage, the cost to replace the car, the cost of towing and storage are going to come out of your pocket. The money you saved by not having that coverage does not even come close to the cost to replace the car. Which is why the insurance company wants you waive that coverage. The money they lose on those premiums is much less than paying off your car.
